The last time we saw Tiger Woods tee it up in tournament play he was doing this.
Yup it really happened. We are living in a world where Tiger Woods is winning major championships again. At the start of play on Thursday there will be only one man in the field who can end 2019 having won all 4 major championships, our guy Tiger. Alas, our time for savouring those scenes from Augusta is over, we have a job to do now and that job is chase down Jack Nicklaus one major at a time.
Now as we mentioned the last time the big cat tee’d it up was a full month ago at Augusta National, will rust be a factor? Who knows, but if this new Tiger wants to only play Majors from here on out who I am to say no. At this point in a career that spans 2 decades and includes 81 PGA tour wins, what does a Wells Fargo title do for our guy? Nothing.
Now coming away with a win this week will not be easy. The PGA always brings a strong field and other than the late withdrawal of Justin Thomas, all the big guns will be there and this weeks course is a Monster.
Bethpage Black on Long Island has hosted Majors before with both the 2002 and 2009 US Opens taking place there. That 2002 event just happened to be won by Mr Woods himself. That week he was the only player to break par for the tournament. With the move to mid May its likely the course wont play quite a difficult as it does in the heat of the late summer but it will still require some quality golf to shoot a good score.
With the course playing softer, expect the PGA of America to try and get the rough as punishing as possible making hitting fairways a must and with the course playing over 7,300 yards, dinking and dunking around with long irons wont cut it for Tiger. He’s going to have to hit Driver and hit it straight. Now it certainly looked better at the Masters so we shall see but with his iron game as good as it is right now some fairway finders off the tee should lead to chances on the greens.
It wont be easy but last time these eyes watched a major, Tiger won it. No reason to say it wont happen again. I mean bet against this guy at your peril.
